Bed Space in Dubai: 5 Benefits of Renting

Bed space in Dubai will be the best option if you land in the UAE to search for a job. Renting a studio or booking a hotel will be expensive for a job seeker with limited resources and time to secure a job in the UAE. Below I discuss 5 benefits of renting a bed space in Dubai for optimal success in searching for and securing a job.
After several unsuccessful attempts to secure a job in your country, you may decide to try your luck abroad. Since you have heard lots of positive stories from people who traveled to Dubai and made it. But you might ask yourself how or where do you start? As the process of getting there seems straightforward—that is applying for a visit visa and an air ticket— and viola you are in Dubai. How to settle, integrate, and adapt to the new environment might cause you sleepless nights.
Case in point, shelter being one of the basic needs of a human being will be your main concern after landing in Dubai. Others might not be of concern because you will carry your clothes and food while traveling. Remember the main goal is to search and secure therefore, filling your travel bag with lots of food should not scare you.
Why a bed space?
So you have decided to travel to Dubai to search for a Job but you don’t have a relative or friend to accommodate you while doing the job search. What options do I have? You may ask yourself. The obvious answers will be a hotel, a flat, or an Airbnb. But are these options affordable to a person who has come with a visit visa to search for a job in Dubai? Absolutely No! Not if you come from a wealthy family. So if these options are too much expensive for a job seeker, what options do I have? You may ask again. Glad you asked. The best option you have is a bed space and I will tell you why.
According to The Hong Kong Home Affairs Department, bed space is any floor space, bed, bunk, or sleeping facility used or intended to be used as a sleeping accommodation. But this is too much English, A bed space in a layman’s language is simply a room filled with double-decker beds separated by curtains where you rent an upper or lower bed.
Note: Some have single beds commonly known as partitions but you don’t need them for now because they are more costlier for a new job seeker.
Where to get a bed space
You will think that getting a good bed space is hard but it is not. Because if you go to the internet and type ‘bed space for rent in Dubai’ and press the search button. The results will not be satisfactory enough. And that’s where Facebook groups come in.
Facebook Groups
You see, those people who come before you in Dubai made it easy for newcomers to get valuable information after creating Facebook groups. In these groups, they share information and hacks to survive in Dubai. Therefore, to get more desired and customized results I recommended you to join these groups. All nationalities have their own Facebook groups.
If you are a Kenyan traveling to Dubai to search for a job. I suggest you join KEWA UAE—a popular and friendly Kenyan Facebook group in UAE. Once a member, you will have a variety of options and offers immediately after asking for a bed space. The group is made up of all Kenyans in the United Arab Emirates therefore, you will feel at home and avoid the imposter syndrome in this new city and country.
Fun fact: Dubai is not a country but a city among seven cities—Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ajman— that make the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi is the capital city.
A bed space from inside
What does a bed space look like from the inside? You may ask. Well, If you went to a Kenyan boarding high school you have an idea of what a bed space looks like in Dubai. Only that in a bed space you are allowed to:
- Cook your food.
- Wash your clothes with a washing machine.
- Enjoy free unlimited wifi.
- Intermingle, interact and share a bed with an opposite gender without fear of being caught.
- Enter or leave the room anytime you want. Etc. Compared to the High school dormitory.
Please note: women-only bed spaces are available but you will find zero men-only bed spaces.
How much is the rent of a bed space
Bed spaces just like rental houses their rent normally depend on several factors such as:
- Area of the villa or the flat that hosts the bed space. For instance, Deira City Center may be slightly lower compared to Al Satwa.
- Type of the building —villa or flat.
- Accessibility to public transport i.e. Bus stations, bus stops, and Metro.
- Spaciness. The more spacious(less beds) more rent, less spacious(more beds) less rent.
Some factors are more specific to bed space like the bed you choose to rent. In our layman’s definition of bed space, we defined a bed space as a room filled with double-decker beds where you rent a lower or an upper bed. Now in this case, if you decide to rent a lower bed—which is not advisable for a new jobseeker—you will pay more compared to an upper bed.
On average an upper bed space rent cost will range from AED 350 to AED 500 depending on the factors I have mentioned above. Additionally, a lower bed space will cost you around AED 600 to AED 750 for a single person per month. You can also decide to rent a bed space as a couple(or partners on rare occasions) at a cost of between AED 700 and AED 1000.
Benefits of renting a bed space
Apart from bed spaces being affordable to a fresh jobseeker in Dubai, there are other advantages of searching job in a bed space.
1. Guidance and connection
A bed space is made up of both people who are working and those who are searching for jobs. Therefore, those who have jobs can refer or update you whenever they have an opening in their company. In so doing, they will guide you on how to build and tailor your curriculum vitae to meet their company’s requirements for the job posted. Working roommates will also connect you with their friends and colleagues hence, increasing your chances of securing a job.
2. Assimilation and adaptability
Time for searching for a job mostly will be limited to one or two months based on your visit visa. Hence, assimilating and adapting to the new environment will be of the essence. Therefore, you may need to rent a bed space because all members of the room will be of your nationality. Sharing the same cultural identity such as the same taste of food and language will make it easy for you to adapt to the new environment. Imposter syndrome feeling that may affect you when you get into a new environment will have no impact on you while adapting to the new territory.
3. Motivation
Renting a bed space means sharing a room with people you share the same goal with will be beneficial to you and your roommates. The main goal in this situation is to secure a job you will be able to motivate each other to pursue your mission. Going rounds across Dubai and other Emirates to drop resumes and showing up for walk-in interviews under the hot scorching sun of the United Arab Emirates does not seem easy. But having some people to encourage and push you will make it easy for you.
Sometimes you will feel tired and opt to sleep instead of going out to knock on office doors to drop off your CVs. But this feeling will be immediately counterattacked when you see other job seekers going outside to do what your feelings are telling you not to do.
4. You will never sleep hungry
In a bed space, you will rarely sleep hungry if you don’t have something to cook or eat. Due to the high cost of living standard in Dubai, your money may deplete before you secure a job or your visa expires. This is a call for disaster because everything in Dubai is money except breathing air. But this is not the case if you stay in a bed space. Your countrymen and women will not allow their own to sleep hungry or miss an interview because of bus fare. A bed space is a community of people who care and look out for each other. If someone with food notices that you don’t have something to eat she or he will offer you a plate of food.
5. Explore Dubai with ease
Apart from searching for a job in Dubai another reason that brought you here is to experience the beauty, marvel, and wonders of Dubai. Like the Burj Khalifa— the tallest building in the world. And its marvelous architecture, amazing parks, beaches, and all the good things you have heard or seen on television and social media.
Being a new visitor in the country you might need to walk on a paid giant shoulders to see all Dubai has to offer. But not in bed space. In a bed space, you will not need to pay someone to show you around as your fellow roommates will provide you with all information and directions of where you want to go.
There are other many reasons why you should rent a bed space while searching for a job in Dubai, but these are the main ones. Now you may ask are there drawbacks of renting a bed space? Of course, there are. For example, staying in a congested area with a curtain acting as a boundary between you and your neighbor does not sound good. But what options do you have? A studio, Airbnb, or a hotel apartment. Hell no! You may consider these drawbacks as life lessons to make you stronger mentally. It is said that when life gives you a lemon you should make a lemonade instead of complaining it’s bitter. I did that and documented the lessons learned here.
