Guide: How to get a Kenyan passport in Dubai

You might get confused about where to start after your passport expires in a foreign country like the UAE. But it would help if you didn’t worry because since April 2014 Kenyan Consulate Dubai started offering passport services to Kenyan expatriates living in Dubai like you. The process of replacing your expired Kenyan passport should also not worry you because it is straightforward if you have all the necessary documents. In this article, I will walk you through how to get a Kenyan passport in Dubai.

Required Documents before you start

To begin the process of applying for a Kenyan passport in Dubai, you must have the following documents.

  1. Filled passport application form(downloaded from eCitizen portal)
  2. Two payment invoices (downloaded from the eCitizen portal)
  3. Original Kenyan ID and copy
  4. Birth certificate copy
  5. Your parent(s) ID copies
  6. Your Guarantor/recommender ID copy.
  7. A copy of your resident/visit UAE visa.
  8. Copy of your old passport

Cost of applying for a Kenyan passport in Dubai

The cost of applying for a Kenyan passport in Dubai will vary depending on the passport page number and the type of passport you want to apply for. When applying for your passport you will select from the following categories;

Apply for the Kenyan passport online(via eCitizen)

To apply for a Kenyan passport in Dubai you must do it online through the eCitizen portal. Therefore if you don’t have an eCitizen account go to the eCitizen website and create one. To create an eCitizen account you only need your Kenyan ID number and valid email address. And by the way, an eCitizen account is important because you will need it when applying for a Kenyan good conduct certificate for employment purposes in Dubai. Before you begin, have these documents saved on your device

Before starting the online application process make sure you have the following documents saved in the form of an image in the device you will be applying from. They will come in handy at the last process because you will need to upload all of them to the website. You will save a lot of energy by saving them on your mobile phone or computer before you start.

  1. Recent passport-size photo with a white background 
  2. Your signature on a white background paper
  3. Your Kenyan front copy ID
  4. Your Kenyan back copy ID
  5. Your passport bio-data page
  6. Your passport description page
  7. Your passport 3rd last page
  8. Your passport 4th last page
  9. Recommenders ID (if required)

Once logged in to the eCitizen portal:

Navigate to the Directorate of immigration services and click get services.

Then select the Passport application

In this step, you will select from the drop-down menu if you are applying for your child or yourself.

Next, you will read the instructions for applying and submitting the filled passport application form. After you are done reading you will click next.

In this step, you will choose whether you have Dual Nationality or not and then click next.

Here, you will select the passport type and fill in the old passport particulars, and then click next.

Make sure you select Dubai as the place of collection and submission in this step. And then fill in your details and then click next.

Fill in your parents’ details. If your parents’ details are not available or they are deceased you will only fill in their names.

Here you will enter at least two next of kin details.

Uploading and payment

At this step, you will upload all files you saved on your device before moving on to the payment section. Therefore, before you start the online application process, make sure you have all these documents saved on the device. You will save a lot of time!

After uploading all the files you will be redirected to the homepage where you will confirm your details before paying the required amount. You will pay either via M-PESA or credit card. Then, you will download and print the application form and two invoices.

Note: Your guarantor will be required to sign your application form after printing it. Also if you are replacing the old generation passport or first-time application you will be required to fill in recommenders details.

Submitting the documents to Kenyan Consulate Dubai

To complete the process of Kenyan passport application you must submit and present yourself at the Kenyan Consulate Dubai for Biometric enrollment and carry the following documents:

  • Printed passport application form from the eCitizen portal
  • Two printed invoices of payment from the eCitizen portal
  • Original birth certificate and one photocopy
  • Original National ID Card and one photocopy
  • Three current passport-size photos
  • One photocopy of the recommenders’ ID card
  • Old passport for replacement plus photocopies of its last three pages
  • Photocopies of parents’ National ID cards (if available) or Death Certificates (if deceased)
  • A copy of your resident/visit UAE visa.
  • For a lost Passport, an affidavit, a police abstract, and an explanation letter are required
  • For a mutilated Passport, an explanation letter is required to explain the circumstances of the mutilation

How long does it take to get a Kenyan passport in Dubai?

Once your passport application has been processed, you will receive an email or text message to collect your passport at the consulate in Dubai. Ideally, once you have submitted the application form and other required documents at the Kenyan Consulate Dubai, it will be ready within two weeks. It might take longer if you filled in wrong or incorrect information during the application process

In conclusion, getting a Kenyan passport in Dubai is an easy process. You only need to have all the required documents, have an eCitizen account for online application, submit your filled application form and other documents to the Kenyan consulate in Dubai and wait for your passport within two weeks at best.
